I've always liked to
work with the hands. But only after a heart attack I started to use them more intensely.
Until then, I was so involved with my job - as a science and technology development
specialist - that I couldn't imagine the pleasure that the manual work can afford.
My fist contact with bamboo was in childhood, preparing fishing rods. I rediscovered
bamboo during the time I was writing a book about my 'heart attack experience' and how it
changed my life style.
The first pieces were sort of an occupational therapy, but in a few weeks the work with
bamboo became an important activity.
In the past six years I should have produced more than 1100 pieces. Many
of them were destroyed by voracious insects and just a few were given to friends as a
present.
Exhibitions and
workshops in distant cities as well as some reports in the press turn me into a singular
person. It is very common that people ask me, smiling, about my spoons.
I was born in October of 1947, in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo - Brazil. I
live in Vitória and I´m married with Carol for the past 28 years, with whom I have five
children: Rafael, Manaira, Isabel, Bento and Diana.
My wish is to dedicate more time to extract beauty and harmony of small bamboo pieces and
help other people to release the pleasure involved in it.
